Fortune reports that AT&T is preparing to offer a $200 subsidy for buyers of the next-generation Apple iPhone, widely expected to be introduced this summer. It writes that since the new, presumably faster models will start at the same $399 base price as the current iPhones, that will drop the effective price to $199.

Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit (BU) has announced the release of Messenger for Mac 7, its instant messaging client. Messenger 7 requires Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later and a Windows Live ID for personal accounts, or a Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 account for corporate accounts

TomTom officially debuted its new GPS handheld, the TomTom One XL this morning. TomTom XL 330/XL 330S boast a slimmer frame and come packaged with the new EasyPort mount, which apparently, you can keep attached to the GPS, fold it down, and still manage to fit into a pants pocket. The unit will be out in June for $399.

The eMachines T5254 costs less than similar systems from Dell and HP, and it outperforms them (in some cases), and uses less power while doing so. Highly-anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) IV is expected to break records for the fastest-selling game of all time and many shops are opening their doors at midnight for gamers. The game has been classified as 18 in the UK and Mature for US gamers. Grand Theft Auto IV will retail for $60.

Nokia, the world’s top cell phone maker, has unveiled three new phone models, targeting the highly competitive market for mid-priced phones. The shipments of the new phones — Nokia 6600 Fold, Nokia 6600 Slide and Nokia 3600 Slide — would start during the third quarter. The selling prices are going to be in the range of 175 to 275 EUR.

The latest version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution was officially released to the public today after the beta-test period. This version is designated “LTS,” for “long-term support,” which should make it attractive to business customers who prefer a longer upgrade cycle for their operating systems.
