A Comparative Review of Present.ly and Yammer: Enterprise Microblogging Tools

Yammer is a microblogging service launched in September 2008. Like Twitter, it allows users to post updates of their activities, follow others updates, tag content, and create memos. Unlike Twitter, Yammer focuses on businesses, and only individuals with the same corporate email address can join a given network.

Present.ly is a micro-update communications tool like Twitter for your company. Give your employees the ability to instantly communicate their current status, ask questions, post media, and more.

Some of the noticeable differences are:

  • Present.ly can be deployed internally behind the firewall within the company’s own network. But, Yammer runs on outside the firewall at Yammer server.
  • Present.ly is free for upto 5 users, $99/ moth for 100 users and the price is negotiable for unlimited users. The cost of Yammer is $1 per employee per month, after a 30-day free trial period. It is negotiable for 1000 employees.
  • As opposed to Yammer, Present.ly doesn’t need a company email address and you have administrative powers from the beginning.
  • A URL-shortener is included in the interface for Present.ly. But, Yammer does not need it as it removes the 140 character limit.
  • Yammer interface is much simpler than Present.ly.
  • Present.ly supports file attachment from the beginning and Yammer recently added this enhanced functionality.
