Apple Unveils Macbook Air, the Thinnest Laptop in the World
Apple just announced the .76-inch thin MacBook Air (starting at $1799) — a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. It weighs only 1.36 kg.
The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. It also comes with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz, 2 GB (DDR2 SDRAM) RAM, 64GB solid-state drive hard drive, 13.3 in. TFT LED backlit display display, Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard. Wi-Fi 802.11n as well as Bluetooth 2.1 is supported. Graphics are handled by the integrated Intel X3100 GPU. Peripheral connections include a USB 2.0 port, micro-DVI port and one Audio out/Headphone port. What it doesn’t come with are built-in ethernet ports, FireWire, and optical drive, or enough graphics power to power a 30 inch Display (but you can hook up a 20 or 23 inch display via a built in mini-DVI port).
We’ve built the world’s thinnest notebook - without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display. When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
MacBook Air, a very cool small body laptop, also has a built-in step towards changing the entire technology… there is no DVD or CD-Rom drive on the machine. None. Why? Because the hardware is suggesting, quite clearly, how you should interact with the software. Rent or buy movies online… no need for a disc.
