Facebook, the social networking site, is dramatically changing its look to reduce the mess and give users more control over how they interact with their friends and share personal information.
The new look incorporates tabs at the top of profile pages to help users navigate among multiple applications, photos and personal data. The Wall, a section where friends post comments, photos and videos, will now feature “stories,” or updates about users and their friends’ recent activities on Facebook. Users can also write notes, upload and even take photos directly from within the Wall application.
The new profile page cleans up the applications by moving them into the “Boxes” tab, but what’s more important is application security. On the new Facebook, apps are now “try before you buy.” That is, you can interact with the application before adding it, granting it access to your information, and deciding where to put it on your Facebook profile. Also, app makers will no longer be rewarded for forcing their users to promote their apps and apps that don’t meet certain privacy requirements will be banned.
Facebook designers said they want to allow users to test the redesign before it becomes the default. The social networking site said it launched the redesign to clean up users’ profile pages and improve organization. The new layout also aims to cut down on the need to scroll down to view profile pages. The site has more than 70 million users worldwide and boasted more than 20,000 applications before announcing plans for a redesign.
