PC Tools iAntiVirus provides real-time protection and comprehensive system scanning to ensure your Mac remains safe and virus free. The beta version is free to download, though there’s a $49.95 charge for commercial or supported use. Once your computer has been infected, a virus or worm will usually attempt to spread itself to your friends, family and associates by accessing your email contacts and networked PCs. The infection may also allow hackers to access files on your Mac, use it as a zombie to launch attacks against other computers and websites or to send mass SPAM email.
While there are a variety of anti-virus applications for the Mac, iAntiVirus seems to be especially designed to reduce resource usage by ignoring virus signatures for Windows. The idea is that your Mac is immune to Windows viruses. So there is no point of wasting memory, etc. scanning for them.
The iAntiVirus user interface is very intuitive PC Tools claims, making it easy to scan for viruses, remove and manage infections, and more. As any quality antivirus, iAntiVirus allows Mac users to use multiple scan types, providing a balance between optimizing system performance and the thoroughness of a scan. Everything else you would expect from an antivirus program is there.
iAntiVirus will compete with tools from Symantec, whose Norton Antivirus for the Mac was launched several years ago, as well as Avast! Antivirus for the Mac, which charges for the Macintosh version.
