IBM Launched SaaS version of Lotus Notes Domino
Big Blue released this week Lotus Notes Hosted Messaging service, a hosted version of corporate email service, Lotus Notes/ Domino. The company is going to charge $10 per user for the service. The service will also provide spam and virus filtering, backup and restore services and 1GB mailbox. It is expected to compete with Google gmail and Microsoft Exchange online.
IBM will host Domino on dedicated servers within its own data centers. IBM expects most customers to run the Notes client on their desktops. Although, browser option is also going to be there. The company is targeting the service for retail, global manufacturing and insurance companies. Existing Notes customers can use the service because Notes Hosted Messaging works with both Notes 7 and Notes 8 clients.
The company elaborates its data center architecture for Notes Hosted Messaging as a “hybrid of single and multitenancy with some characteristics of both.” The Lotus messaging software will reside not only in one IBM Data Center, but, several of them. IBM will use existing data center infrastructure to host the application.
