IBM to Launch Broadband Service Through Power Lines to Enhance Its Widespread Implementation in Rural Areas in US

IBM unveiled an idea to implement Broadband through Power line. The technology was here for quite a while, but, it was never implemented. The Blue chip company ties up with International Broadband Electric to launch the new mobilization in the distant part of rural area. Other companies tried to provide the service before with the similar concept. But, it didn’t go further. The basic service starts from $29.95 per month with 256 kbps download. But, other plans offer download speed upto 3 megabits per second which is in line with DSL or Cable.

“The technology is important but what’s really important is this is a seminal moment in the delivery of broadband services to rural customers,” said Bill Moroney, the head of the Utilities Telecom Council, an industry trade group. “Here’s a beginning and really a great leap forward.”

The technology involves sending the data through the same wire that provides electricity. A device in every half mile clamped with the wire continues to send signal. Customers can plug a modem into any wall at home. But there is a risk of interference like ham radio signal etc. The important part is that new technology has the ability to remotely control the devices fixed to power lines. That way it can be told to switch frequency when it meets interference.

Different low interest loans and improved technology helped IBM to initiate this venture. The technology is in the spotlight for the last few years because of the fact that most of the Broadband providers can not afford to build infrastructure in rural areas. That’s why broadband through power line is more economical compared to regular service at remote areas.
