Intel Announces Penny Sized Solid State 2GB & 4GB Drives
Most of us think of Intel primarily as a processor manufacturer. But, the No. 1 processor manufacturing company announced late Friday that it is making a solid-state drive for handheld devices that is very light and weighs less than a penny.
The Z-P140 drives will be available in 2GB and 4GB sizes, and are intended for low-power devices like smartphones, portable video players, and handheld computers. The company claims that it is 400 times smaller than a 1.8-inch hard drive and I agree 
The drive uses flash memory to store data, and have a PATA Menlow (parallel ATA) interface. They are an option for the upcoming platform Intel is releasing for mobile devices next year. The drive will read data at 40 megabytes per second, write at 30 megabytes per second, and consumes a meagre 300 milliwatts of power while in use. The drive will go for mass production in the early 2008.
Intel is targetting Z-P140 for not only consumer-oriented devices but also educational and governmental institutions.
