New IBM Web 2.0 Software Bridges the Gap between Enterprise and Web

IBM today announced that its new portal software, IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1 Beta, with Web 2.0 support is going to narrow the gap between Enterprise and Web. The public beta is now available from ibm.com - WebSphere Portal 6.1 beta. The new portal supports IBM AIX, HP-UX, IBM I5/OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows Server.

A portal is a technology for providing external and internal Web sites which can deliver information, applications, and processes to provide a personalized experience to individuals. Web 2.0 technolonogy is mostly used to empower people with content, social connections and other technologies to solve the problem.

New features introduced in this WebSphere Portal V6.1 Beta 1 release include:

  • Simpler download/install
  • WPS will have lot of Web 2.0 features such as Ajax, Symantic tagging, Google gadgets
  • New Web 2.0 support to dramatically improve performance of the browser based user experience
  • New Site management capabilities greatly improve abilty to promote portal applications from test to production
  • Step-up authentication providing options to extend end user security options
  • New Theme customizer portlet improves ability to create and manage portal themes
  • Updated out of box example web sites with new support for preconfigured internet security and virtual portal support
