Review of WebLoad, an Open Source Load Testing Tool
Overview:
WebLOAD provides a comprehensive and robust environment for load testing, stress testing and performance testing. It can load-test any Internet application, including applications that use Web 2.0 and AJAX. This project is based on twelve years of code development by previously proprietary WebLOAD, the award winning commercial performance testing solution for internet applications from Radview Software .
It has three parts.
-
Webload Console:
The WebLOAD Console is where you perform the majority of your load / performance testing activities. The Console provides full control over the load session during test execution. It enables online changes to load size, and allows you to stop and start the entire session or change the selection of currently displayed Load Generator statistics.
-
Load Generator:
-
The Performance Measurements Manager
It provides the performance metrics of server side components while the test is running. The server side components include operating system (e,g, CPU, memory, etc), application servers, databases and web servers.
The Load Generator gathers from complete range of client side statistics to the most detailed (low level) performance statistics such as “connect time” for every TCP/IP connection.
Additionally, the Load Generator can also track and report on the performance of a user defined group of protocol commands.
System Requirements:
· Pentium III 800 MHZ or above
· 512 MB RAM minimum
Features:
- Uses Java script for script programming
- Allows for session handling, outside of cookies
- Supports Ajax, SOAP and Web services
- Has a Forum for Support related question
- Allows for automated script recording
- Allows for use of any COM or Java object in the test script
- Has debugging features of script etc.
- Supports command line execution and enable a scheduled run
- Has a separate performance monitoring program
Disadvantages:
- Some developers complain that WebLoad is not an open source in true sense. Contrary to what their press release and website says, it contains proprietary components that are released in binary form with no source code.
Conclusion:
Anyone interested with performance testing a web server should evaluate Webload. Its current feature surpasses any open source performance testing tool today. An active community and development team should ensure for further satisfaction of users.
