Verizon to Push for Faster Speed for FiOS Internet

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) said Wednesday that it plans to expand the availability of its super-fast Internet service, further pressuring the cable providers in the speed game. Verizon high-speed Internet is currently available in 26 states, while FiOS has thus far reached 17 states. Check the company’s Web site for availability.

The No. 2 U.S. phone company plans to boost download speeds to up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) from a previous 30 Mbps for premium FiOS subscribers, according to the draft. At 50 Mbps, a person could download a high-definition movie in 13 minutes, or a 60-minute Web video in eight seconds.

Someone with a 450-minute per month plan, for example, can sign up for a FiOS mid-tier Internet plan for $84.99 per month, or savings of about $13. Adding FiOS TV to the bundle brings monthly costs to $124.99, or $15 less than unbundled service.

Verizon high-speed Internet, with 3 Mbps downstream, plus a 450-minute wireless plan will run $69.99 per month, savings of $14, according to Verizon.
