IBM and Nokia announced today that Nokia Smart Phone users will be able to access Corporate IBM Lotus Notes from next month. Nokia made this announcement with the backdrop of falling demand of mobile phones due to global financial crisis. Some analysts predict that there is a bright future of Smartphone in the coming year. Nokia sold 1.1 million of its new sleek E71 phones in the third quarter that outsell RIM’s business Blackberry Bold by five-to-one, according to Nokia.

IBM, a well known provider of Business Intelligence and Performance Management solution, recently unveiled new IBM Cognos 8 Banking Risk Performance- a packaged application that gives bank managers and risk managers a faster, timely detailed view of their credit portfolio across products, geographies and business units. The solution is built on open source, SOA architecture and can be plugged into existing financial, administrative modules of the banks. The solution will be launched mid December worldwide.

Astronauts on board and technician on ground, at NASA , will be using Open Source Software, Problem Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action (PRACA) system to streamline the process of problem reporting and analysis. The software was developed by Human-Computer Interaction Group at NASA’s Ames Research Center. The user will be able to resolve issues with the help of the PRACA system by analyzing similar report in the past.

SUN MICROSYSTEM is now going through a very difficult phase after financial meltdown all over the world. It did not recover fully from the dot-com crisis as of yet. They planned to cut 6,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its global work force. Sales of high end servers, specially for financial sectors fell 27 percent in the latest quarter and that made a big dent in their revenue. The cuts should save an estimated $700 million to $800 million annually.

IBM unveiled an idea to implement Broadband through Power line. The technology was here for quite a while, but, it was never implemented. The Blue chip company ties up with International Broadband Electric to launch the new mobilization in the distant part of rural area. Other companies tried to provide the service before with the similar concept. But, it didn’t go further. The basic service starts from $29.95 per month with 256 kbps download. But, other plans offer download speed upto 3 megabits per second which is in line with DSL or Cable.

The Compulab Fit-PC is a tiny, silent, extremely low power computer (3 -5 watts). Thus, if a medium size company can replace most of their front end PCs with this Ultra Slim ones, that save lot of energy and electricity bill. A company can also use it as a thin client. The weight of the Fit-PC is only 16 Oz and the size is 4.7″ x 4.6″ x 1.6″ so that it can fit into small area. Enterprise can use it for web access/research, office productivity applications, and instruction in business applications. In other word, Fit-PC suits well for use at office or enterprise.

Intel is going to announce its latest release XML Software Suite 1.2 at SOA World Conference & Expo, November 19-21, 2008. The recent release will optimize the overall performance of SOA, SaaS and Web 2.0 based applications while lowering cost of ownership. Suite 1.2 is a set of C++ and Java runtime libraries for Linux and Windows. It offers better XML parsing and schema validation and makes XML Software Suite easier to integrate with Java development software.
