The Nano’s performance boost is because of the manufacturing process that shrinks the size of transistors on the chip to 65 nanometers versus 90 nm for the C7. More transistors on a chip translate into higher power-to-performance ratios. VIA designs the chips and contracts manufacturing with Fujitsu.

The Nano line supports a full 64-bit instruction set and has a 1-MB L2 cache. The chip’s VIA V4 Front Side Bus has a speed of 800 MHz. The processors have on-die hardware cryptographic acceleration and security features.

Time Warner Cable Plans to Launch Web to TV Link

Time Warner Cable Inc plans to offer subscribers an easier way to bring Internet video to their television screens as part of an overall home networking system, Chief Executive Glenn Britt said on Friday.

“We’re actually going to have equipment we make available to subscribers,” said Time Warner Chief Executive Glenn Britt. “It’s actually going to be a new wireless Cable Modem that will allow you to network everything in your house. “Within a relatively short time, it’s going to be very easy to get Internet TV on your big screen TV.”

Mr. Britt compared his system to the ease with which the Apple TV connects people to the iTunes store or their Mac or PC on a home network.

TiVo Inc lets many of its subscribers select Web video from providers such as The Onion, the New York Times and CNET Networks. The video is downloaded from the Internet to a TiVo set-top box for viewing later.

But Web-to-TV technology is still in its early days, due in part to the complexity of making Web video look good on higher resolution TVs.

Consumers may also be hesitant to navigate the thousands of web sites that offer unique video, and to buy more equipment in addition to paying monthly cable or satellite fees.

Nevertheless, technology is booming in this area and where it’s all leading is anyone’s guess. For now, options and offerings can be expected to increase until the consumers vote with their dollars and the industry backs into the best ways to achieve TV and Internet convergence without a gaggle of boxes hooked up to the HDTV.

Intel Pushes Back the Launch of Centrino 2 Mobile Platform

Intel is expected to launch of its mobile platform Centrino 2, codenamed “Montevina” in July this year. Centrino 2 is the first platform to offer an integrated Wi-Fi and WiMax wireless access option, Intel said. In addition, the processor and other components are about 40% smaller and it has longer battery life.

The Centrino 2 platform will be built using Intel’s new manufacturing process that shrinks the size of transistors on a chip to 45 nanometers, thereby increasing the number of the components on each processor. With more transistors than Intel’s previous 65-nm chips, the newest processors are able to deliver more processing power at the same level of energy consumption.

Centrino 2 brings a major graphics upgrade for systems without dedicated video hardware and also introduces a faster 1,066MHz system bus for some processors, the second generation of Turbo Memory flash-based cache drives, and the option of a WiMAX adapter chipset known as Echo Peak.

Samsung to Launch 256 GB SSD this Year

Samsung Electronics plans to unveil a flash memory-based solid-state disk within this year (Sept. 08) that boasts a 256G byte capacity using a SATA II interface, it said Monday. The 256GB edition reads sequential data at 200MB per second, twice the rate of the original model, while also seeing an even greater increase in write speeds: where the earlier drive writes at 70MB per second, the new SSD writes at 160MB per second. This comes in a chassis that is also described as one of Samsung’s thinnest at 9.5mm (0.37in).

More important still is the cost of the technology behind the drive, Samsung says. Rather than use costly single-level cell (SLC) technology, the company has managed to develop a multi-level cell (MLC) storage drive that transfers as quickly as the best SLC storage while costing much less to produce than past SSDs. Improvements to the storage controller have also extended the longevity to as long as SLC drives, giving the 256GB drive longevity as good or better than some rotating hard disks.

In laptops especially, these drives with no moving parts unlike conventional ones, have the potential to save power and boost battery life along with operating system responsiveness. The drive isn’t the first SSD launched at this capacity. Last month a competitor, U.S.-based Super Talent, began sales of a 256G byte SSD but that drive is thicker than Samsung’s at 12.5 millimeters. It has a SATA I interface, which means read speeds of 65M bytes per second and write speeds of 50M bytes per second.

  • Supercharge Excel: This program from Data Instruments Group adds handy features to Excel, improves existing ones, and makes the application easier to use. For everything from tracking down broken links to generating median values to trimming errant spaces, this software is certainly worth the price of admission–plus you can try it free for 15 days. DigDB for Excel costs $59 per year.
  • TrustFax: To use the service you scan the document in the multifunction printer, upload the file to the TrustFax Web site, and send it off. It doesn’t get much easier than that. It costs $30 a year for a fax number, 50 outbound and 150 inbound fax pages, and online storage.
  • SmartDraw: Sometimes you need to draw things like boxes, circles, and arrows. That’s when you turn to SmartDraw, a business-graphics app from the company of the same name. The listed price is $297. But, it gives discount from time to time.
  • AskSam: This database lets you store all sorts of data, from Word documents to e-mail to Web pages, that you can retrieve with simple, free-form word searches. ‘Add Web page to AskSam’ feature works only with Internet Explorer. Standard version costs $150 and faster one cost $395.
  • FolderShare: It creates a mirrored image of your most important folders - like your Favorites, Pictures, and Documents - so they’re the same on all your computers. Sharing with friends, co-workers, and family is easy when you add and update files in a shared library. Install FolderShare on all your computers, and you can access all your files from any computer on the Internet.

What to Do When Windows Gets Blue Screen of Death

Most of the computer users came across the situation where the screen says “A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down…”. Here’s what to do when Windows throws the dreaded Blue Screen of Death your way, and how to restore your OS even if you’ve lost the original restore CD.

When you encounter a BSoD (Blue screen of Death), there’s not much you can do except grumble about lost data, reboot your machine. If you start getting them regularly, however, you have a problem that must be addressed. But, the interesting part is that BSoD screens actually contain some useful information. Please, note down the description and technical details of the problem from the screen.

Then please, reboot your machine and search the web with those problem description. It may be related bad device driver that you changed recently. If that is true, please, do the following.

1. Select Start, Run (in Vista, Run is enough), type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
2. Double-click the device in question, click the Driver tab, and then click the Roll Back Driver button.

Otherwise, if you recently added new hardware to your system, installing a more recent version of the driver may fix the problem. Check the vendor’s Web site to see whether there’s an update.

Sometimes a bad RAM module can create the problem. In that case, you can use a free program downloadable at Memtest to test your RAM. This is not a windows program. You can download this .iso file as a CD image and convert it a bootable CD by using Nero. Then, boot and see what Memtest says.

It may be overheating that is causing the problem. Please, open the cabinet of your PC and use an air canister to clean the dust. While the cabinet is open, please, check to see any loose connection internally.

Occasionally, Registry may be the culprit for the problem. You can try running System Restore or use Registry clean up. PC World recommends ToniArts’ free EasyCleaner and ChemTable’s $40 Reg Organizer for this purpose.

If all of the above attempts fail, back up your data and take it to a registered professional.

HP Discovered Fourth Type Of Memory Circuit

Scientists at Hewlett-Packard said on Wednesday they discovered a fourth basic type of electrical circuit Memristors that could lead to a computer you never have to boot up.

Basic electronics theory teaches that there are three fundamental elements of a passive circuit–resistors, capacitors and inductors. The idea was postulated in a seminal 1971 paper in the IEEE Transactions on Circuit Theory by professor Leon Chua at the University of California (Berkeley), but their first realization was just announced today by HP. Now, a team at Hewlett-Packard led by Stanley Williams has proven that ‘memristance’ exists.

“This new circuit element solves many problems with circuitry today ― since it improves in performance as you scale it down to smaller and smaller sizes. Memristors will enable very small nanoscale devices to be made without generating all the excess heat that scaling down transistors is causing today,” said Chua.

Williams compares the property to water flowing through a garden hose. In a regular circuit, the water flows from more than one direction. But in a memory resistor, the hose remembers what direction the water (or current) is flowing from, and it expands in that direction to improve the flow. If water or current flows from the other direction, the hose shrinks.

The memristor behaves like a non-linear resistor with memory ― a small, compact and highly energy-efficient means of creating a memory device. But Chua and Williams claim it is also a new type of circuit element that should enable the creation of new devices never before imagined.

The eMachines T5254 costs less than similar systems from Dell and HP, and it outperforms them (in some cases), and uses less power while doing so. You can’t configure it before making a purchase, but eMachines has chosen this system’s specs wisely, The eMachines T5254 costs less than similar systems from Dell and HP, and it outperforms them (in some cases), and uses less power while doing so.

The T5254 will feature a 2.1GHz AMD Athlon BE-2350 (Dual-Core) processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive and run Windows Vista Home Premium. It will also offer an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 chipset, NVIDIA GeForce 6100 integrated graphics, a 16x SuperMulti drive, 6-channel sound and a 15-in-1 card reader. They will also ship with your basic multifunction keyboard and PS/2 two-button wheel mouse, and neither include a display. The T5254 will retail for $399.

Compared with last quarter’s eMachines T5246, the new T5254 is just a bit slower across the board. The older model was also more expensive. The more interesting is the fact that the eMachines T5254 so thoroughly trounces the Pavilion a6400z. It also passes the $539 Dell Inspiron 530 on both Cinebench and iTunes. In truth, the performance differences between these systems are not that significant (at least until you get into the $700 territory, as represented by the Mac Mini and the quad-core Acer system), and as long as you stick with basic multimedia editing and stay away from 3D gaming, we expect most budget buyers will be satisfied with their speed. T5254 will get credit, though, because it uses less power to deliver performance similar to other desktops in its price range.
